Congratulations to Dr Nicole Flemming, lecturer and researcher in Biomedical Science at UniSC, who has been awarded a LAUNCH Grant to advance research into diabetic kidney disease using patient-centred kidney models. Her work focuses on understanding the impact of glycaemic variability on kidney health in people with diabetes.
Through this project, Dr Flemming aims to develop a novel approach for investigating the cellular mechanisms underlying diabetic kidney disease. She plans to isolate kidney cells from patient urine, grow them into kidney tubuloids, and examine how these cells change over time. This innovative method will enable researchers to study kidney function in a personalised and non-invasive way.
‘Research like this is so important for us to understand the disease but also to work towards new treatment and one day, a cure.’ - Dr Nicole Flemming
