Professor Michael Kimlin conducts world-leading research into the environmental factors that lead to cancer, particularly skin cancers including melanoma. His research expertise encompasses skin cancer, sun exposure, vitamin D in Australia, sunburn and eye damage.

In 2015 Professor Kimlin accepted a research-focussed joint role at USC and Cancer Council Queensland as Foundation Chair in Cancer Prevention.

Having significant, nationally and internationally recognised developments in the field of cancer prevention, Michael plans to increase these alliances and expand his research in conjunction with the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital and Sunshine Coast Health Institute at Kawana.

In October 2010, in his former role at QUT, Professor Kimlin received an NHRMC funding grant to establish a Centre for Research Excellence in Sun and Health (CRESH). He also formalised the AusSun Research Lab which conducts research in untraviolet (UV) radiation and its subsequent health effects on Australians.
